The renovation
The stone house was built in the early 1900s and belonged to a wealthy merchant family; this was the period when Panormo was a very important mercantile port for the island. Large quantities of vegetables, carob, oil and other goods to the UK, France and the rest of Europe were shipped through Panormo's port.
So Panormo has its history and so does the house. During the 2nd world war it was used as a club and casino by the German officers. In recent years the ground floor hosted two shops, the grocery store of the village and the newspaper shop.
When the renovation started in 2011 its condition was such that almost everything had to go: only the 75 cm thick stone walls were kept. During the works a well and a couple of arches were brought to light. As the house has been
classified by the Greek state as ‘traditional’ and thus protected by law, we fully respected the traditional details and materials and reproduced it as it had originally been.
We collaborated with a fantastic local team of workers who specialize in renovating stone houses. As to the interior decoration, it is based on antique pieces belonging to our Cretan family and other Cretan traditional furniture found locally. All in all, a great adventure that lasted nine months. The result is beautiful, elegant and authentic.
